Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.

What is coaching?

Put simply, coaching is a process of partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole. Standing on this foundation, the coach's responsibility is to:

  • Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve

  • Encourage client self-discovery

  • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies

  • Hold the client responsible and accountable

This process helps clients dramatically improve their outlook on work and life, while improving leadership skills and unlocking unknown and unlimited potential.

What is the difference between coaching Counseling and Consulting?

Here is a general summary of the differences between each profession.

  • Coaching – focus on future, nothing to fix, create awareness, structures to create lasting results, coach and client are partners

  • Therapy – focus on the past, issues to fix

  • Consulting – client has a problem that the consultant can solve, assumes a level of expertise over client

  • Training – educating the client, assumes a level of expertise over the client

What are the Benefits of Coaching?

Professional coaching brings many wonderful benefits: fresh perspective on personal challenges, enhanced decision-making skills, greater interpersonal effectiveness, and increased confidence. People who undertake coaching also can expect appreciable improvement in productivity, satisfaction with life and work, and attainment of relevant goals.

Coaching works because of the partnership created. The coach supports the client to develop new skills and awareness and overcome limiting beliefs that prevent the client from identifying and setting goals. The coach creates an environment that fosters the synergies needed to move forward to a more effective and successful life.

What should I look for in a coach?

Coaching is a partnership between the client and coach. Having an initial discovery session with a coach allows you to see if the coach’s style and personality is a fit for you. Additionally, effective coaches are objective, non-judgmental, power listeners, insightful, and direct.

Here are some criteria to keep in when researching a potential coach:

  • When you talk to them, do you feel safe and heard?

  • When you talk to them, do they say anything that resonates?

  • Does their overall approach match what you’re looking for?

  • Do the logistics of their approach match what you’re looking for?
